Board Approves Club Fundraiser

Posted on: Thursday, 12 April 2007

Cinco de Mayo, May 4-6, in Portland's Waterfront Park will be the scene of Pearl Rotary's fundraising effort to support the Bomberos Project for delivery of surplus firefighting equipment to the Guadalajara, Mexico metro area. The fundraising decision was one of several made by the Pearl Rotary Board at its April 12 meeting.

Pearl Rotary members will be asked to participate with City of Portland firefighters at their exhibit in the Waterfront Park Cinco de Mayo Festival to seek donations for the Bomberos project. This project is a joint venture of the Portland Fire Bureau, Pearl Rotary and public sector and Rotary Club counterparts in the Guadalajara area.( for more info on Bomberos, see additional story elsewhere in the Bulletin ).

EMT's from the Portland Fire Bureau will manage a first aid station at the Festival, and will exhibit a surplus fire truck that will be made available to firefighters in the Guadalajara area. Donations received at Cinco de Maya will go to outfit the fire truck with a variety of firefighting equipment for communities in the Guadalajara region that are currently without adequate fire suppression capability.

Other action by the Board on April 12 included:

  • Approval of new member Matt Mahaffy. Matt is Principal Broker of the Mahaffy Group of Georgetown Realty, located on SW Barbur Blvd. He lives in SW Portland with his wife, Fiona. He attended three Pearl Rotary meetings before making his decision to apply for membership. His membership was proposed by Don Smith.
  • Newly revised bylaws for the Pearl Rotary Club and for the Pearl Fund will be formally posted for a 30-day review by members on the Clubrunner web site this week prior to Board action at its May 10 meeting. Subsequent to Board action, members will be asked to approve the revised bylaws at a Club assembly called by President Myron Fehr.
