'Sure Bet' Fun (in costumes) at Oct. 30

Pearl Rotary casino night at PPRC fundraiser

by Donald Q. Smith, Past President

Casino gambling, food, prizes, refreshments, music all are happening with a Halloween theme at the third annual Bet on the Pearl gala of the Portland Pearl Rotary Club.

The Saturday, Oct. 30, fundraiser will be staged in the Pearl District at Venue Pearl (323 N.W. 13th, Portland) from 7-11 p.m. The benefit's proceeds will help fund a variety of Pearl Rotary projects in the community and internationally (see below).

A fun evening is assured, both by the setting in a Halloween-decorated ballroom and by the games ranging from Blackjack to Let it Ride to craps to roulette. Fellow Rotarians from the Columbia County Rotary Club will serve as dealers. The most successful gamblers will have their choice of prizes ranging from Pearl-area restaurant certificates to fine Willamette Valley wines.

Tickets at $60 are now on sale by Pearl Rotarians. You can also e-mail President Phil Rothrock ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or call 503-281-9711). Checks can be made to the Pearl Fund, the non-profit arm of PPRC. Those attending are invited to come in Halloween costume.

Pearl Rotarians are also selling $10 tickets for a chance at a one-week cruise for two on Holland American Line. Those need to be purchased before the Oct. 30th event.

Fun and fellowship with Rotarians and friends are assured on Oct. 30 (see images from last year's Bet on the Pearl). And you'll be supporting important volunteer projects!

Newsletter on Outbounds September 2010

by David Bangsund

One of our Outbound students, Savannah Webber is going to school in Lima, Peru.  Like all exchange students, she is having to adjust to a new culture.  In Savannah’s case, the culture is more related to her being in a Catholic school than it is to being in Peru.  Here is an excerpt from her blog of August 28, 2010 (http://savannah-webber.blogspot.com)

…(M)y school is a private navy and Catholic school.  Well yesterday there was a true testament to the Catholic aspect!

The Bishop of Peru came to visit our school, which was a big deal. So we all (we being everyone in the school) went out in our tidy lines by gender and class, and stood outside because there is no space in the school for everyone! And there was a lot of ceremonial entrance with some flag marchers, band, mini choir singing the national song of Peru, lifting the flag of Peru, introduction, ect.

….Then later in the day we had Mass. Catholic mass is incredibly ornate!  There is also a lot of standing, sitting, standing, sitting, and so on. Accompanied with a lot of songs thrown into the mix. There was also… ooh, I can't remember what it's called, where those who have recently confessed can accept the wafer and wine as the blood and body of Christ. And I got really scared that I was gonna have to get into the line and do the same, but luckily not everyone went up, so I could just sit and watch (pheew)! It was also very long, it lasted an hour and a half, but there was a lot to see!

Also related to church and school, as I am in fourth year I have to deal with the issue that everyone is going through confirmation, but I can't take part in everything that they are doing because I'm not catholic- though trying to explain what Unitarian Universalist is is incredibly difficult- and I was never baptized, which kinda rocked the boat. …

Our Outbound student Lauren Hall is going to school in Finland and seems to be having a ball.  Here are a few comments from her blog.  (http://lauren-finland.blogspot.com/)

Lauren with big hairSo school has been going well. I know where everything is, and everyone knows that I am American. One reason is that last Thursday all the exchange students gave a presentation to the entire school; I am proud to say America got more cheers than Mexico or Canada! And second, I am probably the loudest person in the building; I don't mean to be, Finns are just really quiet. Also, I am white, but I probably have the most exotic, thickest hair. I actually stand out!

My favorite class is English because I spend my time learning Finnish with a German, and they are learning British English. Whenever they listen to tapes, I have trouble holding back my laughter.

I am still loving the food here. I have found my comfort food- apples. There are so many apple trees here, it's incredible. Also, last week, I really wanted spaghetti. So, on Friday, with my Canadian friend and a Finn, I went to a restaurant and got spaghetti. It was expensive for one plate, but so worth it. Also, the ice cream here is really good, and really cheap. I have been biking into the village a lot just to get an ice cream cone, great times.

As much as I like the food, I do not eat all day. I have made a lot of new friends. I went to a youth group last Saturday night with great people and great music. Before that I went to a mideavil festival, where I saw jousting!.... On Friday, I played ultimate, and of course, got my spaghetti. Yesterday, there was an opera at the castle. It was incredible, and I have never been to an opera before.

A note from one of our Short term exchange students

by DAVID BANGSUND

Here is a note we got from one of our short term exchange students, Elise Zeidman.  After she graduates from Cleveland High School she is going on another exchange, this time to Argentina.

I think like many things, a short-term exchange is what you make it; it can become a vacation, but can also be a life-changing experience. My experience with STEP has been unusual and amazing. I went to Ecuador last summer to stay with Xime and her family. It was the hardest, most uncomfortable and best experience of my life. In the language and culture as well as my relationship with Xime, I worked as hard as I could every day to make things work out, and it was not always easy. In fact, it was often far from easy. But, when I left last summer, I had a strong relationship with Xime and her family and I had begun to become comfortable in a foreign country.

Xime's family invited me to come back this summer for Xime's graduation. I spent about four weeks in Ecuador this summer. It was so wonderful to go back. Nothing feels better than working hard for something and having it turn out so well. When I went back my Spanish was good enough that I understood what was going on and I could be part of the conversations. I knew people already and I met lots more. I felt comfortable there, which couldn't have been farther from the way I felt upon arriving last summer. I guess you could say this trip was more of a vacation (but then it was meant to be, wasn't it?), but I also learned a lot more than I had expected.

I want to thank you for making all of this possible. It has been an experience unlike anything I had imagined and has changed my life. I would love to come to the Portland Pearl Club and talk about it. Thanks again,

Elise .

This is me with Xime, her brother, Mario, and their mom, Ximena, last summer when they took me to a bull fight (culture shock!).

Y.E. Vanderford brothers make PPRC Tuesday visit

by Donald Q. Smith

They both graduated from Lincoln High School. They both have the University of Oregon as their alma mater.

And both Nigel and Mason Vanderford are past Rotary International long-term youth exchange participants: Nigel, to Denmark, in 2002-03; Mason, to Taiwan, in 2005-06.

The Vanderford Brothers visited Pearl Rotary Aug. 9. They were introduced by Rotarian Jerry Baysinger who has past club and District 5100 leadership experience with youth exchange.

"I want to thank you guys so much for all your help," said Mason. "You really helped find my niche."

And that career choice: studying the Mandarin language beginning this fall in Taipei, Taiwan.

For Nigel, he returns soon to Wake Forest University for his second year of law school. His specialty: European Union law.

The brothers were sponsored by our Rotary Club Nigel by the Portland Industrial Rotary Club, Mason by Portland Pearl. Their individualized buttons have places in our storage box and were found as they entered the EcoTrust conference room.

Joked Nigel: "I appear to be the only one still wearing a Portland Industrial badge."

Rotarians perform service: Pearl District 'graffiti busters'

by Donald Q. Smith

On two early-summer weekend mornings, Portland Pearl Rotary members joined other volunteers to remove graffiti from public places in the Pearl District.

Armed with solvents, razor blades and scrubbers, Rotarians participated June 13 in a preliminary effort spearheaded by the Pearl District Neighborhood Association. That was prelude to a 50-volunteer effort (including nine from PPRC) which attacked signs and stickers on Saturday morning, July 10. The avenues of 12th, 13th and 14th were targeted, from Burnside to Lovejoy.

The community service effort is part of PPRC's goal of expanding connections within the Pearl District. On the Fourth of July, Pearl Rotary was a major sponsor (and provided volunteers) for the first Pearl Picnic, joining hands with the chief organizer, the Pearl District Business Association. On Oct. 30, the third annual Bet on the Pearl casino night fundraiser will be staged at Venue Pearl.

For the two three-hour stints of graffiti abatement, PPRC was saluted by Jan Valentine, a leader of the project with the neighborhood association. She wrote:

"Thank you to everyone at Pearl Rotary we could have not done it without your participation. Pearl Rotary contributed a total of 68 volunteer hours as 'Graffiti Busters,' working to remove graffiti from five major avenues."

The next step? According to Valentine:

"In August 2010 an 'Adopt-a-Block' program...this will be the method by which we keep the Pearl clear of this vandalism and reclaim our streets, establishing a pristine standard for our precious Pearl."

Pearl Rotarians will be asked to adopt a block.

And, if the board and club agree, Pearl Rotary may have a natural leader in Jo Barney, wife of past president Don Barney. From their previous home in Northwest Portland before moving to the Pearl a few months back, Jo quietly and informally adopted a block and cleaned signs. She earned the title:

"Graffiti Grandma."

And she was even introduced that way by Councilwoman Amanda Fritz on July 10 when Fritz saluted volunteers before they attacked graffiti on signs, parking ticket kiosks, bike stands, gas and electric meters and utility poles.

PPRC launches program for sharing professional advice

Traditionally, the vocational service area of Rotary Clubs has focused externally: how Rotarians share their business background with youth, particularly in high school, who express an interest in the classification that member holds.

In Pearl Rotary, such volunteerism has happened through visits to high schools, mentoring, mock interviews and appearing at job fairs. Establishing job-shadowing and internships has been discussed by the vocational service committee chaired by Yelena Girich.

The club's internal vocational efforts have included formal networking sessions at club meetings and a table which displays business cards and brochures of fellow Rotarians.

Welcome to Portland Pearl Rotary Club

Rotary International was founded in February 1905 in Chicago, Illinois by Paul Harris. Portland Pearl Rotary (PPR), one of some 31,000 local Rotary Clubs established since then, was founded initially in 1975 as Portland Industrial Rotary Club to serve the industrial area of Northwest Portland. Over the years the character of Northwest Portland has changed greatly as has our club.
To reflect these changes, in 2005 Portland Industrial Rotary changed its name to Portland Pearl Rotary and moved from Northwest Portland to the center of the Pearl District.

Our Programs

What does PPR do besides listen to great programs over breakfast?

  • Fellowship is a Cornerstone: We build Club fellowship though our weekly meetings, frequent social events (holiday dinner, summer picnic, monthly social hours after work) and by working on community service projects and serving on Club committees.
  • Community Service: Programs serving our community are at the core of PPR's commitment
  • to "Service Above Self." Examples include delivering Meals on Wheels every Friday,  leaning up our parks, and participating in special projects for local nonprofit organizations.
  • International Projects: We have participated in funding micro banks in Guatemala and in the development of a school water system in Honduras. We are currently helping fund a Women's Health project in Fiji. And we are exploring ways to partner with Portland's Fire Bureau to expand its training and equipment assistance to firefighters in Guadalajara, Mexico.
  • Youth Exchange: Every year we host an incoming Rotary Youth Exchange high school student from another country and also sponsor an outgoing exchange student from Portland to attend school for a year overseas.
  • Local Organizations: We extend financial support to selected non-profits which serve the local area such as: Albertina Kerr Centers, Friendly House, Boy Scouts, Multnomah County Library Foundation, and Loaves and Fishes.

Club Interaction

We enjoy activities that inform our members about each other. Tuesday morning "Rotarian of the Day" talks fill members in on fellow members' lives and professions. "Brag for aBuck" is a fun way to learn about the good things happening in members' lives and  businesses.

What we expect of our members

"Service Above Self" does involve Club expectations:

Attendance.  PPR members are expected to attend a minimum of 60% of our weekly meetings (Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. in the Ecotrust Bldg. in the Pearl), or to make up at other Rotary Clubs in the area. Certain Club functions (committee meetings, service projects) also count as attendance. Each PPR member is expected to be active on one or more committees to carry
out service projects.

Contributions. PPR's dues structure and fund raising participation:

Initiation (one-time, new members only)

$150

Annual Club dues (payable in July)

$200

Annual fund raiser (member participation)

$100

Brag for a Buck (Participation over the year)

$25

Rotarian of the Day

$25
